Crystal Cleansing 101: Salt Cleansing

Crystal cleansing can be a bit of an overwhelming topic, particularly if you are new to crystals. Many people can have different ideas about what the best method is for crystal cleansing but in reality I think its a very personal choice, just so long as you know that not all crystal cleansing methods are suitable for all crystal types. Read on to find out more about salt cleansing!

For thousands of years salt has been a faithful tool and ingredient- a symbol of purity and preservation, it's flavoured our dishes, preserved our food and even been used as a deterrent of evil spirits, but did you know it can also be used to cleanse your crystals?

Crystals store energy and so along the way they can sometimes pick up lingering negative energies or simply energies we know longer wish to hang around. Regular crystal cleansing is said to improve the performance of our crystals, with many people doing it regularly and whenever they buy new crystals for their collection. Think of it as an energetically cleanse rather than a physical cleaning.

Salt is said to be deeply purifying, helping to soak up and dispose of any negativity. Its properties are also said to help raise the vibration of your crystal, increasing its power.

To cleanse your crystals in salt we recommend using natural sea salt as it a gentler option than some other alternatives such as table salt. Fill a dish or glass bowl so that the bottom is lined with the salt, place your salt safe crystals in the dish so that their base is resting in the salt, you may wish to add other purifying items such as herbs. Leave your crystals in the salt overnight, this is particularly potent if done on the night of a full moon in a space where the bowl or dish can soak in the moonlight all night.

You might have noticed I said salt-safe crystals, this is because not all crystals will be safe to be cleansed in salt and some can be damaged or destroyed if cleansed in this manner. Generally, the harder the crystal (this can be checked by using the Mohs scale, a scale of hardness expressed numerically with the higher numbers being the hardest) the safer it will be to be cleansed in salt.

Some well known salt safe crystal include: Amethyst, Aquamarine, Fluorite, Jade, Lepidolite, Rose Quartz , Sodalite, Tourmaline, Obsidian and some Jaspers. if you want to be absolutely sure you can check if your crystal will be salt safe with a quick google search.
